Process of selling stamps
The process of selling stamps through our international auctions starts with a free appraisal of your stamps. The valuation is done by one of our philatelic experts in our office or at home. If you doubt whether your stamp collection has any value, it is possible to have a provisional appraisal by email or WhatsApp. The auction process can be divided into six steps, which we explain in more detail below.
- Consigning
- Describing
- Catalogue
- Viewing days
- Auction
- Payment
1. Consigning your stamp collection
If it turns out that your stamps represent any value and are suitable for our stamp auction, you will receive a consignment receipt from us. This will state the estimated appraisal value. Your stamp collection is insured according to the stated value from the moment of acceptance.
2. Describing your stamp collection
The next step for selling your stamps concerns the describing of your collection. This is done in such a way that your collection generates optimal attention among collectors and potential buyers. For example, we may divide your consignment into specialized collection lots concerning a certain theme/topic, country, rarity etc.
The description of our lots is in English, since we serve a large international customer base. The only exception to the English descriptions concerns lots of Netherlands and its former colonies. After the expert has finished the describing process, you will receive a consignment confirmation with lot numbers and corresponding starting prices. We take high-quality photos of your stamps which are published online on various platforms to reach as many potential buyers possible.
- Describing collection and making lots
- English descriptions for global reach
- Consignment confirmation: list with lot numbers and starting prices
- Photos of all your lots
3. Shipping catalogue and (online) advertising
The stamps for sale will be included in a full colour hardcover catalogue. We will send the catalogue to potential customers and prominent collectors all over the world. As consignor you will also receive this catalogue. In addition lots of attention goes into digital promotion of your lots on our website and various auction platforms. This ensures that your consignment will receive the most optimal coverage among collectors.
4. Viewing days for potential buyers
Experience learns that collectors like to visit our viewing days to view your lots in real life. The viewing days are popular and take place under supervision at our premises in Amstelveen. This way potential buyers can determine their bids on lots in our auction even more precisely.
5. The auction of your stamps
During our auction it will become clear what the final results of your lots will be. We organize an international auction in the spring and in the fall. There are usually two to three auction days per auction in our auction room in Amstelveen. You can attend the auction yourself or follow the stamp auction online if you wish. The auction is always an exciting moment and it is always a cheerful event. Buyers may bid in the auction room, submit a written bid or bid live remotely. You can follow the provisional highest price of your lots in advance online since the auction opens approximately one month before the actual auction days.
6. Payment
Selling stamps via the auction is the goal. Almost all lots are sold during the auction, but there are also situations in which sale through the auction is not always successful. The unsold lots can then still be bought at their starting price one week after the auction. If this does not happen, we might include any remaining lots in a future auction after consultation with the consignor. You will receive a consignment statement within two weeks of the sale. This will state the total results minus the commission deducted. Payment will follow within five weeks.
